I've been hesitating to write here. I've been waiting to see what the shift of Dec. 21 feels like firsthand. This, in a way, is what I'm wanting to discuss. The entirety of the blog is, really. I could call the blog "timeless yoga meets timelessness of the new era" but that's silly and sounds like a newspaper headline from the 20th century. The Dream KC is a reminder that this world we create, and this community of Kansas City we create can be ANYTHING we want it to be. There is no need to feel held back anymore. This is what the shift is feeling like for me so far. Now that being said, there are things in between being lined up with a perfect reality. Lots of work to be done in terms of letting go. And to create reality there is a delicate and interesting dance between will and surrender. Our independent wills are hardly interesting enough to create the power and complexity that is available to us. This is why willfully surrendering is important.
Anyway, it continues to be interesting how all the uncovering of yoga helps me to hear people's thoughts better. I went to the post office the other day to mail a package. There were five people in line ahead of me, all with multiple packages. Some had children. There was one clerk. So I waited in line for ten minutes, no big deal. This wasn't the westport location that I'm used to, which is normally way worse, so I wasn't worried about it. As I hung out in the line, I began to tune in to the situation that surrounded me. An old man came and stood in line behind me. After hearing the person ask a question about shipping in a certain box, the old man sharply nudged me and when he caught my eye he gestured toward the guy at the front, shook his head and sighed. Shortly after, he walked out. The clerk knew him by name and yelled after him, "You can jump up here to the front, Ed! Come back!" At that point he was gone. As I continued to listen in, I noticed that every conversation had to do with money. "Saving a dollar by doing blank." or "I'm going to take this package to fedex because I can save a dollar there." "You never get off cheap here." First of all I couldn't believe how much people were getting bent out of shape over a couple of bucks. But then I realized that the clerk was choosing to enable and take on the negativity, therefore making it more real and more likely to continue happening. She actually apologized to the lady who took her package to Fedex. I say if that lady wants to take an extra trip to an extra location and take an extra half hour out of her day then that's her choice and there's nothing to be sorry about. When it was my turn she apologized to me, assuming that I was missing my whole lunch break because of this errand. Actually I was selling an old textbook on amazon and making decent money for it. Paying $2 for shipping and waiting in line 10 minutes while I ran other errands during my day wasn't a bother at all.
Now keep in mind this is all speculation. And for those of you who serve people for a living in some capacity (this is many of us) feel free to add some input. But I suspect that if she walked into her day with positive affirmations every single one of those conversations would have gone differently. See, she had the power to create an environment in there with her thoughts and being. If the environment was one of confidence and gratitude and abundance I am dead certain that none of those statements would have been said, even the ones that weren't directly aimed toward her.
One of the things I like most about serving and being served is my ability to use my thoughts, my intentions and my being to create an environment to help others. If people feel an environment of abundance, acceptance and space, they are more likely to order a lot of stuff and feel good enjoying it.
Friends, it doesn't matter what you are doing for a living right now. If it's not right, put it out there that you are ready for something different and the better fit will come along (The mantra "om namo bhagavate vasudevaya" is applicable for being a willfull request to surrender to a more powerful flow of life). But whatever you are doing, serve each moment with the same openness and curiousity that you approach your yoga postures with. Each interaction, each moment, is an opportunity to be fully present. An opportunity to be alive, listening, breathing. If your intention is to make the world better and to serve others, your job will be a job well done and your day will be a day well spent. We don't all have to be doing our dream job in order to be fully alive. If you decide to spend your day being open to magic, there is a higher likelihood of magic happening than if you just say, "shit, I hate my job and I feel like shit when I'm there." Then the environment will more likely be, you know, shit.
I've thought about this carefully and this is why it has taken me so long to write. And I've always thought that thoughts create reality. But I think the difference post 12/21/12 is that now it is more potent.
Now this being said, there are a lot of unconscious thought patterns that we carry that create our realities. These patterns get passed down generation to generation. It is in your power, now more than ever, to break negative conditioning. To let go of the memories that you are carrying for your ancestors. Our bodies are blueprints for this kind of stuff and all of our 'sicknesses' (even injuries that seem 'accidental') are pointers to help us see what we're looking for. Nothing is separate. The illusion of separation creates suffering. Suffering is not our natural state. Joy and timeless Being is.
Okay, so here is where the yoga comes in. Consciously being with and listening to the body as it opens up, breathes and confronts challenges can draw up some stuff. Random memories, uncomfortable feelings, etc. So using thoughts to create reality doesn't just mean having a good day because you decide to, although that's a good start. But after awhile you may begin to wonder why patterns continue to unfold the way they do. Being in a conversation with the body helps us uncover and learn about the unconscious conditioning that we've been carrying around this whole time.
We are all royalty and we all have the potential to live amazing fulfilling lives, now more than ever. But for many of us there is some unconscious holding in between this current limited reality and that uncompromised expression of love that is our true nature.
